But before you get too caught up in the romance, let’s talk about what swarming termites are and how to prevent them from turning your home into their next colony aka their love nest.
Where do swarming termites come from?
Swarming termites likely came from a nearby underground nest. Eastern Subterranean termites, which are the group of termites you are most likely to see in Maryland and Northern Virginia, require large amounts of moisture to survive.
If most of the termites you see are found outdoors, the nest could be in your yard, a neighbor’s yard, or even a woody area down the street.
Places to check for a termite colony:
- Old tree stumps
- Landscape timbers
- Any place where wood contacts the soil
- Close to a water leak
If you find swarming termites inside your home, you likely have an infestation in and/or under your home.
What happens to swarming termites?
Once these flying lovebugs find their match, they mate, land on the ground, lose their wings, and begin searching for a suitable place for egg-laying and colony maturation. Unfortunately, this can lead to more termites and more damage to your property.
Will killing swarming termites prevent an infestation?
Killing swarmers may stop them from bugging you, but it won’t prevent an infestation. Swarming termites are simply looking for love. Worker termites are the real culprits behind structural damage.
The presence of termite swarmers, especially within a home or property, is likely a symptom of a thriving termite infestation nearby.
